With the right approach, downsizing can be a liberating experience – an exciting phase where you get ready for a new adventure.Making the lifestyle change to a retirement village can be one of the most exciting times in your life. There are so many benefits to downsizing, you will have more time to do the things you love whether it’s travelling, more time with the grandkids or accomplishing that bucket list. Discover the art of letting go with some of these hassle‑free tips and tricks:

  • Make a list of all your belongings. Start by asking yourself which items are important to you? What could you live without? Then you’ll need to decide which items you will keep, give to family or friends, donate or sell.
  • This is where you need a good list. Draw a table with the headings ‘keep’, ‘can live without’ and ‘upgrade/replace’. From your belongings list, place each item under one of these headings.
  • The ‘keeps’ you keep and the ‘can live withouts’ can be sold or donated – try your hand making some extra cash utilising online sales website such as Gumtree. Assessing the ‘upgrade/replace’ items could be as simple as swapping a bulky media cabinet for a wall-mounted TV.
  • Ask yourself: “Is it useful? Does it hold a sentimental value? Do I really love it?” These questions will help you decide.
  • If you’re unsure whether you want to keep something or not, take a photo of the item – then you’ll always have a keepsake memory.
  • Donate, sell, recycle or reuse – be environmentally responsible, and find a home for everything. Your trash could be someone else’s treasures.
  • Ask your nearest and dearest family and friends to help. Downsizing can give you more time to focus and embrace the lifestyle that matters most to you.
